Why do I need my Portuguese birth certificate to get my NIF?
If you were born in Portugal or hold Portuguese citizenship, you will need to provide a copy of your Portuguese birth certificate to get your NIF. Any individual who holds Portuguese citizenship has a Portuguese-issued birth certificate/record. This applies even if you were born outside of Portugal or are a dual citizen. Unfortunately, without this document, we won't be able to put in the request for your NIF with the tax office.
I was born outside of Portugal and got my citizenship through descent, do I have a Portuguese birth certificate?
If you have a Portuguese citizenship, that means that you also have a Portuguese-issued birth certificate/record. If you were born outside of Portugal, your birth details were inputted into the Portuguese legal system when you were registered for citizenship, thus creating a Portuguese birth certificate.
